![]() ![]() ![]() Cyclopedia Exotica is a triumph of hilarious candor. Through this parallel universe, Dhaliwal comments on race, difference, beauty, and belonging, touching on all of these issues with her distinctive deadpan humour steeped in millennial references. However, they are bent on finding love, cultivating community, and navigating life alongside the two-eyed majority with patience and the occasional bout of rage. Now, readers everywhere will delight in the print edition as Dhaliwal seamlessly incorporates feminist philosophical concerns. Whether they’re artists, parents, or yoga students, the cyclops have it tough: they face microaggressions and overt xenophobia on a daily basis. With her startling humor, it's no surprise that Aminder Dhaliwal's web comic Woman World has a devoted audience of more than 150,000 readers, updated biweekly with each installment earning an average of 25,000 likes. In Cyclopedia Exotica, doctor’s office waiting rooms, commercials, dog parks, and dating app screenshots capture the experiences and interior lives of the cyclops community a largely immigrant population displaying physical differences from the majority. ![]() Also serialized on Instagram to her 250,000 followers, this graphic novel showcases Dhaliwal’s quick wit and astute socio-cultural criticism. ![]() Publisher’s Synopsis (From its website)įollowing the critical and popular success of Woman World-the hit Instagram comic which appeared on 25 best of lists-Aminder Dhaliwal returns with Cyclopedia Exotica. Now Ed Vere is back with a new series of picture books about a scrap of a black kitten first seen in Max the Brave. The sequel, Max at Night was published this month and follows Max as he turns superhero, fearlessly prowling the city at night.Įd’s picture books draw on classic comic book action and have bold graphic design elements, so I was interested to find out the books that shaped him as an author. Big, the jazzy gorilla who showed that sticking out in the crowd could be a very good thing. The show is a great adaptation of Leviathan Wakes, doing everything a good adaptation should fleshing out characters, moving around plot to make it more concise and watchable, while still keeping the core beats and character moments. Everything that happens personally affects the characters that you follow and you just can’t help but root for them. The authors do a fantastic job of hooking you into the mystery of the greater world while still keeping you very invested in the stories of each of the characters. It feels far more personal than you’d expect for a book with such a large scope. Despite the massive scope of the events, the book manages to keep you very well invested in the lives of these men and their crews. More than anything, the book focuses on how the actions of these two men impact the world around them and in turn how they cope with the things they cause. They both end up embroiled in conflicts far above their pay grade and well out of their depth. The story follows the journies of two different main characters, Jim Holden and Detective Miller, as they end up thrust headfirst into an epic mystery of galactic proportions. I’d describe it as a book that managed to keep me on the edge of my seat, but I don’t tend to sit down when listening to audiobooks. ![]() ![]() ![]() Neatly constructed and nicely pitched, the message of self-reliance comes through as clear as a cloudless day.
